Caribbean Sunsets Are Worthy of Epic Pics: 8 Sunset Photo Taking Tips

What’s better than vacationing on an idyllic Caribbean island?

Having professional looking, insta-worthy sunset pics to show off your Caribbean vacation.

This day in age, if you have a phone, you have a more than capable camera. With technology always improving phone camera’s have come quite a long way and are capable of taking clear and beautiful pictures.

Santa Barbara Beach & Golf ResortMore surprising than the capabilities of phone cameras – what can be done to enhance the quality of a sunset pic with a few easy tips and tricks.

Having a rad sunset photo isn’t the only reason to vacation in the Caribbean, but having beautiful memories to share with loved ones sure is gratifying.

To help you along in your picture-perfect vacay, here are a few simple photography tips we hope you can utilize!

The Rule of Thirds is Key

Ever heard of the rule of thirds? This is a general photography principle that enhances almost any photo. Imagine your image as being divided into nine equal parts by two equally spaced horizontal and vertical lines. The important parts of your photo should be places along the lines and their intersections. Basically, you don’t want the focal point of your photo to be right in the center, rather off to the side, etc.

Santa Barbara Beach & Golf ResortForeground First

Some of the most striking sunset photos are so striking because of the foreground and the sunset. Maybe there’s a pretty beach landscape beneath the sunset, or perhaps a pier nearby. Try to add in some of the foreground to add beauty and depth to your photo.

Look for Objects Reflecting the Sunset Colors

The brilliance of a sunset penetrates every surface it touches, and this is a great opportunity for you to get a beautiful foreground, or even an entirely separate picture.

After Rain Sunsets Are the Best

If it happens to rain during your Caribbean vacay, plan on snapping some pics as soon as the clouds begin to clear for the most epic sunset photos!

Santa Barbara Beach & Golf ResortLinger Longer

After the sun sets, there is that lingering gorgeous multi-colored sky to look forward to. Wherever you are sit back, relax, and wait for round two – usually about 20-25 minutes after the sun has set.

Scope Out Your Location Ahead of Time

If you’re really feeling serious about scoring some stellar pics, then planning ahead is a great idea. As you explore the island keep in mind the places that will show off the sunset beautifully. If your phones’ weather app doesn’t tell you the time o the sunset, download an app that specializes in listing sunset times! Don’t forget – you want the sunset location to be facing west. Otherwise you may not actually get that sunset picture. Beaches and other locations facing east are best for sunrise photos instead.

Play Around With Unusual Angles

Get down low, find somewhere up high, play around with the angles! You may just be surprised at what you can achieve with a good squat.

Find Some Stability

Last but not least, try to keep the phone as stable as possible. Maybe prop the phone on a flat surface, or even consider getting a tripod for it. In low light especially, the camera on the phone slows the shutter speed to allow more light to come in, making it easier to get a blurry picture. If you just have your body to work with, hold the camera with both hands and let your upper arms rest against your torso to keep the camera still.

Santa Barbara Beach & Golf ResortNow you can take impressive sunset photos anywhere in the world, but we are firm believers that the Caribbean is by far one of the best destinations. Get a Taste of the World’s Fastest Growing Water Sport on the Idyllic Island of Curacao

Wind, sea, and surfboards… a combination that has resulted in one of the fastest growing watersports in the world.

If you haven’t already guessed, we’re talking Kitesurfing.

What exactly is kitesurfing anyway?

Essentially, it’s an extreme water sport combining aspects of paragliding, surfing, and wakeboarding,

Santa Barbara Beach & Golf ResortThe kite-boarders (or surfers, the terms are used interchangeably) propel themselves across, and through, water on a surface resembling a wakeboard, using the power of large kites, similar to a paraglide, which are attached to the boards by a few lines.

It’s truly an extraordinarily thrilling sport, and offers the chance to feel connected to the elements in a way few other activities allow.

Initially new kitesurfers are learning how to balance and skim the top of the water, but as practitioners progress there are many spectacular movements that can be learned.

Even if you have no intentions of trying the sport yourselves, it’s mesmerizing to watch.

Kitesurfers will jump, fly and flip through the air looking as light as a feather as the wind supports their activities.

Unlike surfing, kitesurfing requires no waves, only wind, making it greatly accessible in many parts of the world.

One of the absolute best destinations for kitesurfing is none other that the idyllic Caribbean island of Curacao.

Santa Barbara Beach & Golf ResortCuracao, 40 miles north of Venezuela and conveniently situated beneath the hurricane belt, is the “C” is the ABC islands and is part of the Netherland Antilles.

Due to Curacao’s steady 16-20 knot trade winds, relatively flat shallow open waters, and warm balmy temperatures year round, it’s an ideal destination for the sport.

Whether you’re a complete beginner or have been kitesurfing for a while, Curacao has the perfect spot to get a healthy dose of kitesurfing in.

Beginners Venture to…

St. Joris Bay. Calm waters and steady breeze define St. Joris Bay as an excellent spot to practice kitesurfing. It’s easy to spot the bay, especially on the weekends, since the telltale kites can be seen in the sky before the water even comes into view. The bay is pretty big, and is protected from the waves of the East side of the island, keep the water calm but the wind fierce. You can visit this site to check out the details on kitesurfing lessons.

Beginners and Intermediate Practitioners Venture to…

St. Willibrordus. Located on the West coast of the island, St. Willibrordus is another by protected from the waves. The water is flat, and has plenty of wind chop for good kitesurfing. Located behind the flamingo sanctuary.

Santa Barbara Beach & Golf ResortAdvanced Practitioners Venture to…

Klein Curacao. A small island 15 miles off the coast of Curacao, Klein Curacao (meaning little Curacao) is an incredible kitesurfing spot, but should be reserved for advanced surfers. Because the island is further out to sea, it has off shore winds which are fiercer than the trade winds that blow through the bays. There will also be other swimmers, snorkelers, scuba divers, and boats roaming about. If you’re an advanced surfer, this will be a non-issue, but beginners are advised to avoid this spot.

Those are the three best spots for kitesurfing on Curacao island. Each spot is breathtakingly beautiful, and offers a unique experience. Curacao as a whole has a limitless supply of adventure, entertainment and relaxation, adding value to any kitesurfing trip. Whether you intend to stay for a few days or a few weeks, you’ll surely fall in love with the welcoming island.

When planning your getaway, be sure to book your stay at the luxurious Santa Barbara Beach & Golf Resort. More than just a resort, Santa Barbara is an island sanctuary, a haven you can return to between the excitement and adventure of kitesurfing.
