They say what you do on New Year’s Eve sets the tone for the year ahead. On a small island hidden away in the southern Caribbean, it’s not what’s done on New Year’s Eve, but rather what’s done on Sunday, January 7th.
Some people travel the world in search of unique destinations, hidden gems, and off-the-beaten-track parties; all three describe the world’s most incredible New Year themed float party – Fuikdag.
Fuikdag Curacao – Everything You Need to Know
Forget posh hotel parties, skip the downtown club, and trade snow for sand, sun, and sea. If you’re looking for an unforgettable New Year’s experience, there’s only one place to be – Curacao for Fuikdag 2018.
Floaties + Fun = Fuikdag
Picture this – it’s a sparkling sunny day, you’re on a boat or a giant inflatable flamingo floating in the Caribbean sea alongside thousands of other people while listening to some of the world’s top DJ’s. People are dancing, drinking, laughing, swimming, floating, and savoring every drop of the experience to carry with them into the year ahead. This is what Fuikdag is.
Curacao is a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and thus the word Fuikdag is Dutch and simply means Fuik Day. What started decades ago as a group of Fishermen wanting to wish each other a happy New Year on the water, has since turned into the world’s biggest unorganized float party!
How to do Fuikdag
Fuikdag is one of those events where a bit of preparation and pre-planning go a long way. Fuikdag itself is just one day, but Curacao can be easily enjoyed for a week or more as you prepare and then recover from the big event. Here are a few tips to help you prepare:
- Book your flight and accommodations in advance as much as possible
- If you want to rent a boat, book immediately – everything will be sold out or rented out day-of
- Give yourself a few days after the event to rest and enjoy the island
- Bring a floating device with you, again anything Fuikdag related will sell out on the island
- Make friends with locals upon arriving on the island! Locals will
- Try to arrive at least two days prior, to shop for supplies, chat with locals for advice, secure any rentals, etc.
- If you aren’t renting a boat, secure a ride to the bay itself, you can only get there by boat
- Go with the flow! Fuikdag is a just-show-up-and-enjoy kind of event, anything goes!
Unlike other giant parties with epic DJ’s, Fuikdag is absolutely free! If you don’t live on the island, you will still, of course, have to purchase a flight, accommodations, food, etc. but the price to actually attend the event is zero. As far as the music goes, it’s always a surprise. There is never a lineup, as mentioned this isn’t an officially organized event, it’s more of a gathering that has grown in size each year. Last year HARDWELL showed up and played, in years past DJ’s such as Martin Garrix have played!
Fuikdag is held in a bay called Fuik Bay, which borders Santa Barbara Beach & Golf Resort. Staying at Santa Barbara Beach & Golf Resort will not only allow you to be as close as possible to the event making it easy to come and go, but it’s also the perfect place to relax and recuperate after the big day. What’s more is the team at Santa Barbara are all experts regarding anything Curacao, and will happily guide you as you prepare for your Fuikdag experience!
Why You NEED to Be at Fuikdag
When it’s all said and done, Fuikdag is a day filled with enjoying life’s simplest things – the sun, sea, and each other. For a single day, thousands of people unite in excitement for a fresh year ahead. In an age where big events cost big money, and life moves at a shockingly fast pace, Fuikdag is a breath of fresh air. It’s not about money or status; it’s not about being cool or doing something first or best. Just as it started originally with the fishermen, it’s about sharing in the joy of a New Year filled with new possibilities. Anyone can attend, all are invited, and we can guarantee there isn’t a single experience like it.
