Imagine, sinking into the depths of sparkling turquoise water to enter into an entire new world – one filled with colorful fish, alien looking sea life, and a magnificent sense of tranquility.
Welcome to the world of scuba diving. One of the most profound experiences one can have on this Earth, scuba diving offers a glimpse into the world under the sea, a place we know less about than outer space.
Considering 71% of the planet is covered in oceans, there’s much to explore in the underwater kingdom, and a great many places to do it. Not all scuba diving was created equal, though, and there are a few key characteristics that make certain ocean areas much better for scuba diving than others.
Warm temperatures, calm seas, and an abundance of coral and sealife. Those three attributes create the most idyllic setting for scuba diving, and there’s one Caribbean island in particular that boasts a multitude of exceptional diving sites.
Curaçao, the “C” of the “ABC” islands that make up the Netherlands Antilles is the lucky island.
The reason Curaçao is a scuba gem is the same reason why it’s a favorite Caribbean jaunt in general – the island lies below the hurricane belt.
Coral reefs thrive in waters void of hurricanes, and Curaçao is famous of it’s lack of hurricanes. Seriously, Curaçao is home to some of the healthiest coral reefs on the entire planet. Optimal temperatures, nutrient rich water…you know – marine bio stuff.
So as summer inches ever closer, and as you daydream of exotic getaways, it’s time to take a deeper look at the scuba and snorkeling possibilities Curaçao has in store for its lucky visitors.
For the seasoned divers, or aspiring seasoned divers, here are a few of the famous dives around Curaçao:
Klein Curaçao – Meaning “little Curaçao,” about two hours via boat from Curaçao. This is an extraordinary site, where it’s said everything underwater is bigger, and there’s much more. Unspoiled, pristine, and plain fun!
Beacon Point – Located at the western tip of Caracas Bay, this site features the largest pillar coral formation in the Caribbean. Some highlights are: amazing drop-offs, large jacks, grouper, and barracuda.
Lost Anchor – A locals favorite, full of color and lush sea walls covered in gorgonians and sea fans. Hidden behind dense coral growth lies an anchor chain that’s seemingly endless. The dive culminates in a shallow section where seahorses enjoy hanging out.
Barracuda Point – Another favorite dive site, this time featuring dense coral formations, gorgonians, and boulder corals. Turtle spotting is a frequent occurrence, and you may get a glimpse of jacks and barracudas.
Those are just a few examples, but there are enough beautiful dive spots to keep avid divers busy for weeks if not months! To learn about all of the popular spots, visit here.
Now if you aren’t already a diver, or still a new diver, don’t fret because Curaçao is still the perfect place for you.
Because scuba diving is weaved so thoroughly into the local culture, Curaçao is one of the best places to learn how to scuba dive, or take your diving to the next level. There’s an ample supply of expert guides who can and will take care of your every diving need.
Ocean Encounters is the largest dive operator on the island, with multiple dive shops located around the island. Not only does Ocean Encounters provide PADI certification courses, scuba adventures, and all sorts of ocean outings, but they also have their very own natural lagoon at the Sea Aquarium.
For the inexperienced, the lagoon offers an incredible opportunity to learn the fundamentals of snorkeling and scuba diving. Filled with large tarpon, manta rays, barracuda, and dozens of other fish varieties, you’ll feel as though you’re in the open sea!
Whether you decide to go on a Snorkel Encounter, take a dive in the open ocean, or just putter around the bay with some snorkel gear, the delightfully tepid water and vibrant sea life will ensure it will be an experience you won’t soon forget!
